The Footscray-Yarraville City Percussion Academy was founded at the beginning of 2018.

Academy Director Katie Thomas had a vision to provide high quality percussion tutoring in the Western suburbs, and to make this specialised learning area accessible to anyone and everyone. 

 

The Footscray-Yarraville City Academy is part of the Footscray-Yarraville City Band, a world renowned organisation and a staple to the community. We also work with The Hyde Street Youth Band and other organisations around Victoria.

In early 2020, FYCPA moved into the Nicholson Campus of Victoria University. In March of 2020, the whole academy moved online due to the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic. In early 2022 we moved to the beautiful Maribyrnong River, surrounded by parks and wildlife, with coffee shops and Highpoint conveniently nearby.

The FYCPA now has a strong membership of private students of all ages and abilities, a junior ensemble, a senior ensemble and a toddlers class. The ensembles play at festivals and fetes, as well as students competing in local and state-wide competitions. The academy hosts many workshops and masterclasses throughout the year, with local and international musicians bringing many skill sets to its students.

 

The academy offers many different instruments to learn on, such as drum kit, timpani, marimba, vibraphone, xylophone, glockenspiel, and snare drum, and has a full orchestral set including tubular bells, concert bass drum and crash cymbals.
